Unlocking Arkham: Forensic Psychiatry and Batman's Rogues' Gallery
Arkham Asylum houses some of Gotham City's most disturbed villains. But are they truly "insane?" Eisner-nominated writer Tom King (Batman, The Sheriff of Babylon, The Vision)-mastermind of this summer's Batman story arc, The War of Jokes and Riddles- joins real-life forensic psychiatrists Praveen R. Kambam, MD and Vasilis K. Pozios, MD (Broadcast Thought) to explore the mental disorders that plague the Dark Knight's rogues' gallery, offering behavioral analyses of the Joker, Harley Quinn, Two-Face, the Riddler, and other Bat-villains. Are these characters psychotic, or are they psychopaths? What's the difference? The forensic psychiatrists discuss the meaning of these terms and explain how criminal defendants are found "not guilty by reason of insanity" and what happens when they are committed to a real-world Arkham Asylum. Attorney Jeff Trexler (The Comics Journal, The Beat) offers a historical contextualization of the various depictions of the Bat-villains, proving once again that truth really is stranger than fiction! Moderated by Susan Karlin (Fast Company).

Whose Team Are You on? The Psychology of World Beliefs and Personality
In a landscape of intense fictional conflict with Iron Man versus Captain America, Batman versus Superman, Justice League versus the Avengers-which team are you on? A research study conducted by April Fugett, PhD and Keith W. Beard, PsyD (professors of psychology, Marshall University), and Jacob Mills, MA and Britani Black, MA (doctoral students, Marshall University) examined how personality and world beliefs factor into preferences for certain characters, teams, and even specific shows in popular culture. Many people have strong world views and strong character preferences that they identify with, support, follow closely, and spend money on in the forms of merchandise and even brand identity. This support, from Tumblr posts to fan-created merchandise, often available months before retail, affects every aspect of the comic, television, and cinematic universes. This information could be used to better promote and engage people with specific brand and character choices while also giving individuals insight into their own characters and media preferences.

Comics Arts Conference #8: Voices and Visions of Native American Superheroes
Native American heroes' comic book adventures often explore identity and culture. Kerry Fine (Arizona State University) shows how Arigon Starr's reservation hero Hubert Logan, a.k.a. Super Indian, fills a representational gap for the non-native audience while taking up distinctly Native issues in the ongoing fight against injustice. Rebecca Lush (California State University San Marcos) makes the case that Jeffery Veregge's art in Marvel's recent Red Wolf provides a Native inter-text that contrasts with naturalistic narrative panels for commentary on the storyline and characters. Sara Spurgeon (Texas Tech University) argues that Maya Lopez's vision quest in David Mack's Daredevil: Echo Vision Quest is twofold: both a spiritual journey she takes as a Native American guided by the shaman she meets on the reservation and a quest for a visual form of language with which she can communicate as a deaf person in a hearing world, while still maintaining her identity as a Native American in a white world.

Comics Arts Conference #9: Make Ours Marvel: Media Convergence and a Comics Universe
Since the debut of the Fantastic Four in 1961, Marvel has steadily invested in worldbuilding strategies that have in more recent years culminated in the company's globally successful forays into film and television production. Drawing on the anthology Make Ours Marvel: Media Convergence and a Comics Universe (University of Texas Press, 2017), Matt Yockey (University of Toledo), Anna Peppard (York University), and Derek Johnson (University of Wisconsin, Madison) chart significant aspects of the development of the Marvel brand, including Marvel's exploitation of affect to foster brand and reader identities in the 1960s, the company's checkered history publishing comics with strong female protagonists, and Marvel's problematic attempt to widen its reading audience with the "Share Your Universe" campaign.

Comics Arts Conference #10: Feminist Marvels
J. Richard Stevens (University of Colorado, Boulder) examines how Marvel is positioning Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in the lead-up to her film as a credible feminist icon in order to more explicitly address the interests of a rising female readership. Chris Richardson (Young Harris College) argues that Bourdieu's notion of the field, a place in which actors compete for status through symbolic capital, allows us to better understand how Jessica Jones, as a strong, independent, heroic woman, a victim of abuse, a vulnerable and insecure lover, and the product of two men's imagination, has dramatically reshaped the industry in subtle yet important ways. Samantha Langsdale (University of North Texas) sees Marvel's new run of Spider-Woman as feminist in its defiance of the trend in mainstream superhero comics to characterize motherhood as untenable for superheroines by presenting a markedly woman-centered model of motherhood.

Who's the Most Neurotic Superhero?
Ever since the dawn of Marvel's "superheroes with real problems," costumed adventurers have been letting their psychological damage show. Spider-Man's guilt and insecurity, Batman's tango with trauma, Captain America's survivor's guilt, Jessica Jones's smorgasbord of symptoms, and Star-Lord's daddy issues are just some of the mental challenges that modern superheroes deal with. Dr. Travis Langley (Batman and Psychology), R. Sikoryak (Masterpiece Comics), Dr. Janina Scarlet (Superhero Therapy), Alex Langley (The Geek Handbook), and moderator Danny Fingeroth (Superman on the Couch) hold a lively discussion of the psychological challenges that many heroes (and some villains, too) deal with.

Black Lightning Special Video Presentation and Q&A
UPDATED: Mon, Jul 10, 05:20PM
Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) is a man wrestling with a secret. As the father of two daughters and principal of a charter high school that also serves as a safe haven for young people in a New Orleans neighborhood overrun by gang violence, he is a hero to his community. Nine years ago, Pierce was a hero of a different sort. Gifted with the superhuman power to harness and control electricity, he used those powers to keep his hometown streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning. However, after too many nights with his life on the line and seeing the effects of the damage and loss that his alter ego was inflicting on his family, he left his superhero days behind and settled into being a principal and a dad. Choosing to help his city without using his superpowers, he watched his daughters Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain) grow into strong young women, even though his marriage to their mother, Lynn (Christine Adams), suffered. Almost a decade later, Pierce's crime-fighting days are long behind him-or so he thought. But with crime and corruption spreading like wildfire and those he cares about in the crosshairs of the menacing local gang The One Hundred, Black Lightning returns-to save not only his family but also the soul of his community. Based on the characters from DC, Black Lightning is from Berlanti Productions and Akil Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television with executive producers Greg Berlanti (Arrow, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, Supergirl), Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil (Being Mary Jane, The Game, Jumping the Broom, Girlfriends), and Sarah Schechter (Arrow, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, Supergirl). Superheroic Science with Joy Lin
The author of popular animated series "If superpowers were real" on TED.com discusses the real-life implications and scientific issues of having superpowers. For instance: The Invisible Woman would be blind, because light is shining straight through her instead of reflecting off of her; Thor would kill Jane due to decompression sickness if he flew straight up with her by swinging his hammer; and Ant Man would not be able to punch a person effectively because his arm is so thin and short that his punches would be comparable to being poked by a tattoo needle. This panel is science-heavy and is recommended for audience members 12+.
