Unlocking Arkham: Forensic Psychiatry and Batman's Rogues' Gallery
Arkham Asylum houses some of Gotham City's most disturbed villains. But are they truly "insane?" Eisner-nominated writer Tom King (Batman, The Sheriff of Babylon, The Vision)-mastermind of this summer's Batman story arc, The War of Jokes and Riddles- joins real-life forensic psychiatrists Praveen R. Kambam, MD and Vasilis K. Pozios, MD (Broadcast Thought) to explore the mental disorders that plague the Dark Knight's rogues' gallery, offering behavioral analyses of the Joker, Harley Quinn, Two-Face, the Riddler, and other Bat-villains. Are these characters psychotic, or are they psychopaths? What's the difference? The forensic psychiatrists discuss the meaning of these terms and explain how criminal defendants are found "not guilty by reason of insanity" and what happens when they are committed to a real-world Arkham Asylum. Attorney Jeff Trexler (The Comics Journal, The Beat) offers a historical contextualization of the various depictions of the Bat-villains, proving once again that truth really is stranger than fiction! Comic Pitch Review #1
If you're a writer or artist attending the Comic Creator Connection, this is your chance to practice giving your pitch ahead of time?and get some free coaching from a pro. So, what's a pitch? A pitch is the way you present yourself or your project to others. It is usually a brief speech designed to persuade and interest your listener in what you're doing or what you've made. Most creators have no trouble coming up with fantastic ideas for new comics, but many of those same creators struggle to talk clearly and concisely about those ideas to other people. That's your pitch. And if you want to bring your project to life, you must be able to give a good one. Fortunately, this is a skill you can learn and improve with practice?and Pitch Review is a great place to do that. Pitch reviews will be conducted by Douglas Neff, an experienced speaker coach and professional speechwriter, who also co-hosts the Comic Creator Connection. This is not a panel. Instead, these are 3- to 5-minute individual coaching sessions for as many people as can be accommodated in the scheduled time. Everyone is welcome, but please note that showing up is not a guarantee that you?ll get a review session. Spaces are allotted on a first-come, first-served basis.
