Comic Book Law School® 101: 'Help Me Understand'
Getting off on the right foot is key to traveling on the road to success. This year's Comic Book Law School is designed to help you navigate the best possible route (and provide help in deciphering the map legend). Noted IP attorney Michael Lovitz, author of The Trademark and Copyright Book comic book, is joined by attorneys David Branfman and Jeremy S. Goldman for the first of three fun, interactive, and informative programs, which this year will track the progression of (fictional) client as he traverses the many steps involved in creating, developing, protecting, and monetizing a new comic book character. This first installment focuses on the basics and provides attendees with the foundation needed for understanding the various intellectual property rights available to creators and business owners, along with insights on these protections, including how best to safeguard ideas, creative works, characters, brands, and names/titles from genesis through publication, distribution, and beyond. Attendees are invited to participate in an interactive discussion about the rights provided under US copyright and trademark laws, including a discussion on the protections these laws provide, the benefits of federal registrations for each, tips on working with collaborators, and issues of joint authorship and work made for hire. Along the way, there will be plenty to learn about the protections available as well as about the numerous pitfalls that you may find under the U.S. trademark and copyright systems. Note: The Comic Book Law School seminars are designed to provide relevant information and insights to practicing attorneys as well as practical tips to creators and other professionals who may wish to attend. (This program is approved for 1.5 credits of California MCLE.)

Unlocking Arkham: Forensic Psychiatry and Batman's Rogues' Gallery
Arkham Asylum houses some of Gotham City's most disturbed villains. But are they truly "insane?" Eisner-nominated writer Tom King (Batman, The Sheriff of Babylon, The Vision)-mastermind of this summer's Batman story arc, The War of Jokes and Riddles- joins real-life forensic psychiatrists Praveen R. Kambam, MD and Vasilis K. Pozios, MD (Broadcast Thought) to explore the mental disorders that plague the Dark Knight's rogues' gallery, offering behavioral analyses of the Joker, Harley Quinn, Two-Face, the Riddler, and other Bat-villains. Are these characters psychotic, or are they psychopaths? What's the difference? The forensic psychiatrists discuss the meaning of these terms and explain how criminal defendants are found "not guilty by reason of insanity" and what happens when they are committed to a real-world Arkham Asylum. Attorney Jeff Trexler (The Comics Journal, The Beat) offers a historical contextualization of the various depictions of the Bat-villains, proving once again that truth really is stranger than fiction! Moderated by Susan Karlin (Fast Company).

Comics Arts Conference #4: STEAM(Y) Narratives and Graphic Content in Education
We live in a culture dominated by visual imagery. Because our culture is so hyper-visual, literacy is and should be understood as multimodal. Comics and graphic novels can provide a means by which we can begin to examine these multimodal literacies from an interdisciplinary perspective. Comic corporations such as Marvel, with their STEM challenge for girls, have started to examine these interdisciplinary connections, but more needs to be done in the public school setting. Matthew Sutherlin (Henderson State University), Michelle Johnson (Henderson State University), and Amy Counts (Lakeside Middle School) will focus on three STEAM-Y components of a new educational narrative.

How to Judge What Is Appropriate in Comics: What Does T for Teen Really Mean?
UPDATED: Mon, Jul 10, 09:22PM
Cataloging and collection development practices for comic books, especially when it comes to age ranges and placement, can make librarians want to tear their hair out. In this session, the discussion will focus on understanding the content that justifies the labels of middle grade, young adult, or adult. It will also address the question of "Does 'T' really mean for teen?" The panelists will provide their insights on how to manage a series that starts in young adult and ends R-rated. Additionally, because comics are targets for censorship, they will also review how librarians can handle challenges to material and banned books and continue to fulfill the American Library Association's statement on access to library resources and services to minors. With panelists Angela Ocana (Santa Clara City Library), Kelly Quinn Chiu (Santa Clara City Library), Jenny McCluskey (Ingram Library Services), Ben Neal (Portsmouth Public Library), Steven Torres-Roman (San Diego Public Library), and Andrew Woodrow-Butcher.

Hollyweird Science: Information Versus Motivation
When a new science fiction film comes out, so do the science experts (with vastly different levels of expertise) to nitpick the film's science content. The irony is that Hollywood has never been more willing to work with actual scientists to ensure scientific accuracy. Yet, scientists often cite TV series like Star Trek and films like 2001: A Space Odyssey as the elements that inspired their careers. When it comes to the value to science and science education, is the motivational/inspirational component at least as important as the science content itself? This panel of scientists and Hollywood professionals share their thoughts. Featuring Bear McCreary (Battlestar Galactica, AMC's The Walking Dead), Amy Berg (Counterpart, Eureka), Kevin Grazier, Ph.D. (Gravity, Pirates of the Caribbean: DMTNT), Jessica Cail, Ph.D. (Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D ., Zootopia), Rick Loverd (Science and Entertainment Exchange), and Colin Campbell (The Universe, Life After People).
